TOMMY TICKLE...

poem by: Frank Hornby .

"Way back in the '50s...in my small junior school...
it was called corporal punishment....a disciplinary rule,
allowed to each teacher...it give them the license to scold.
some used a cane...if you didn't do as you were told..
It taught us to listen...and not to give cheek,
some teachers were ruthless..."Don't you even dare speak!"
"You must learn to behave...when here in this school"..
but it was sometimes taken too far...some teachers were cruel,
"Tommy tickle" was its name...a wooden ruler, often used with delight...
It lay on teachers desk...she always kept it in sight..
On the back of bare legs..Tommy tickle would painfully smack..
..but it was just evil abuse...when I now think back.
Children today...think my old school was hell...
when my story of "Tommy tickle"...to them i do tell."

hey Frank...love this poem.....we were 7 and if someone was naughty the whole class got the ruler across the knuckles.....I just think they overdid it with the discipline and made kids devious to escape it......

...Now that is cruelty.....imagine these days your young child coming home from school, and telling you that the teacher rapped their knuckles because another child was naughty....hahaha ..parents would be storming the gates!!...thanks Ann for your nice comment...👍🏻...(I'm waiting to read one of your 'memory lane' poems)....soon I hope...keep safe..
