ROUND, AND ROUND THE GARDEN...

poem by: Frank Hornby .
Written on Feb 01, 2019

"Round, and round the garden, like a teddy bear,
one step..two step, tickle under there.
To make your children laugh, would make you laugh too,
and this lovely tickling game was what we used to do.
On the palm of their small hand, while circling your index finger,
singing this happy song, slowly two creeping fingers would linger,
then under their little arm, finally your fingers would reach,
the resulting gentle tickle would make them laugh, and screach!
"Again...again" was always their giggling plea,
so round, and round the garden, again it would joyfully be.
I remember my mother playing that game...with my little brothers, and me,
...it's a lovely memory that I treasure....oh so vividly."

Meant to say earlier, in London we sang "walking round the garden like a teddy bear - nearly the same. However; there are regional differences in nursery rhymes. For example, as I work as a dinner lady , I've been singing "oranges and lemons" to the kids who say they've never heard it before. Also a few times on the bus I've heard babies sing "red colour red colour where are you which I never heard till I came to live in the midlands. Lovely poem as always Frank.
