you will not break me

poem by: Kristen Nguyen

it is both odd and uplifting
that you are the sun of someone’s world
giving warmth, light, and love always
even to those you do not know
and especially to those whom you deem unworthy of

but you are also the moon
for you restlessly glow in the abyss of hopelessness
but you control the tides of your own life
some days it is peaceful
and you can walk upon the soft shore

other days this serenity is threatened
an earthquake occurs
someone tries to shake you
and shatter your very existence and sense of self
but you’ve been here before

and suddenly you are a new being
a force to be reckoned with
forged through the most chaotic of times
you fight for you
and those who cannot fight for themselves

a wave crashes over the land of bitterness, hatred, and toxicity
and is replaced by a sea of tranquility and new beginnings
for you are more than the people who drowned
trying to see into the depths of you
and you are more than the people who greatly underestimate you
