the little things in life

"i love you"
it was barely audible
but i was praying that she still heard me

she sat across from me
sipping on coffee that was much too hot
but she didn't seem to care

it's funny how enchanting love is
she wasn't doing anything
yet i couldn't stop staring at her

eventually she noticed
and gave me the most puzzled look
"why are you looking at me like that?"

a tiny smile left my lips
"no reason"
"well then stop being so weird"

she pretended to be annoyed
but i knew better
and she let out a soft giggle

then returned to her phone
and subconsciously played with her hair
a simple little detail, yet incredibly endearing

a few moments passed
my heart started fluttering
and my anxiety was going through the roof

i wanted to try and tell her again
but before i got the chance
she stood up

"wait!"
i grabbed her by the arm
a little more aggressively than intended

the world seemed to stop for a moment
she was taken aback by my abruptness
i stared into the galaxies in her eyes

"i need to tell you something"
"what is it?"
"i love you"

this time it was audible
i know it was
so why was she not saying anything?

did i speak too soon?
did i just make a fool out of myself?
i always have been such an overthinker

but she simply smiled
squeezed my hand
then walked out of the cafe

i really wasn't sure how to feel
until I noticed that she had left something in my hand
a note

it was all crumpled up
but there were 4 words clearly printed on it
"i love you too"
