I Need to...

poem by: Frank Hornby .
Written on Mar 07, 2017

"I need to return to the days of my youth,
fond memories I just have to hold.
I really don't like facing the truth,
I really don't like growing old.
I need to go back every now, and then,
to times sadly long gone,
I need to hear the Beatles again,
release another fab No1.
I need to do one more daring "belly flop"
across a Toxteth back entry wall,
"Don't worry mum, I'm nearly six, honest I'm not going to fall."
I really need to hear my lovely mums voice calling,
"Frank come in for your dinner!"
"No, I can't come in yet mum, not until I've scored the winner!"
I need to hear my dad gently whisper,
"goodnight, my precious little son,"
but I know that's not going to happen,
because a dad...I've never had one.
I need to play football again, to feel that ball at my once nimble feet,
I need to run wild, and daft with my mates,
playing crazy games again, out in the street.
I need to see Vernon, and Young, scoring goals for the mighty blues!
I need to "bunk in" at the Gwladys street end, because I hated waiting in queues.
I need my loft full of pigeons, again watch them flying so free in the sky,
What made them come back so faithfully to me? I've always wondered why?
I need to see Mary, my girlfriend again, just to feel that strange tingle inside,
because every time that we held each other close,
our love we just couldn't hide.
I need to go cross country running, through local woods called Radshaw Nook,
oh, my head is spinning with fond memories, I'm sure that I could write a book.
But wait, I need to just stop, and realise, that right now is the best time of my life,
because I am blessed with my lovely family, and Mary my still beautiful wife."

People think I''m crazy when I sit there humming "No Reply" haha. Reminiscence is good but time goes on for a reason and some things are left in the past ;)

My life is already filled with happy memories. "Those who forget the past are destined to repeat it". I tend to forget about the bad stuff. This is a problem haha. Thank you, Frank, May you smile upon your past too :)

Wonderful wistful stuff. I've written my share along these lines too. I love this. Nice to know I'm not the only one who would like to turn back time.
