Waves

poem by: Wendy Darling
Written on Jan 14, 2017

You will draw me under,
drowning me in the weight
of your eyes.
I hold my breath.

If I look away, I can breathe.
Look back, captivated.
My chest tries to swell.

Defeated once.
I try again.

Climb the mountain,
and drive ever higher,
pulling you with me,
edging you forward,
upwards, beyond.
It’s not safe.

We roll.
Tangled.
Drawn under,
reaching up,
breaking,
again.

Torment of years
following and leading,
matching wits,
yours and mine,
finally settled
as you crash
on my shore.

Breaking into the sand.
Again.
Once more.

Until we become a gentle tide,
pulling and pushing,
in the moonlight
as one.
