My Love Affair

My Love Affair

Relaxing here on my reclining chair
Eyes are shaded from the suns bright glair
Reading a good book, with drink in hand
Body is turning brown, as it’s tanned

Smells of eastern spices fill the air
This is all part of my love affair
Across the valley, though the heat haze
Views are distorted by the suns rays

Local people going about their chores
Heads are covered, when out doors
Women tend vegetables on a little patch
All around them their chickens scratch

Youths herd goats upon the hillside
While they chew at grass yellow, and dried
Imams’ voice calls from the minarets
A call to prayer before the sun sets

Darkness descends as warm a breeze blows
Leaves rustle on tress, as its path they oppose
Lights glow from windows like fairy lights
This is why I love my Turkish nights

Trevor Cartwright commented:
Alex, I taught history for a few years, so I understand your Eastern references (Imams, minarets, etc.). That poem touched me as a history teacher, but it also touched me as a human being. We all have our cultural joys. I live in Las Vegas, NV, so sometimes I gaze at the strip. You really captured the bliss of living in modern Turkey. Do you live there? Just curious. Even if you don't, your work convinces me that you have really been there!

I enjoyed this poem a lot. Thank you for sharing part of your culture with us. I'm a city boy, and don't really get to experience anything like that.
