One night in February of 2013 at about 2:00 AM GOD woke me with a poem going through in my head. I finally got up and wrote the poem out. I later discovered during the discourse of my learning to write poetry just how special this particular poem was to become. I was so excited I just kept rewriting it until late that morning. I was shocked because I had never read any poetry at all. I just wasn't into that sort of thing. The only poetry I had ever read was in a greeting card, and most of the time I didn't even read that. I had never even read a poem all through school much less write one. So writing something like this was quite an extraordinary surprise to say the least. GOD continued to wake me several times a week. Each time I had the same reaction. This went on for almost a year, I then started to write poems when I was awake. Every once in awhile though GOD still woke me with a poem. I eventually came to the conclusion that GOD wanted me to learn about writing poetry. Because by this time, I had been given almost a hundred poems. I started to learn by reading the works of famous poets such as Poe, Dickens, Longfellow, Frost, and Ole Shakespeare too. People I had heard of, but had never had any interest or need to learn about. I went looking for sites that I could learn more about what GOD had shown me I was to do. I discovered fan story, all poetry and other sites. I had no idea there were so many different genres of poetry. I thought for something to be a poem it was suppose to always rhyme. I was unacquainted with what the different elements were that made a poem outstanding. I didn’t understand the parts of a poem or how words sometimes work or don't work together. I didn’t realize how complicated a simple poem could become. I didn’t know the importance of the syllable count interacting with rhyme, rhythm, flow, meter, slant rhymes, free verse, poems with strict rules, and others with no rules at all. Poetry seemed to become quite confusing at times. Because sometimes there aren't any consistent universal answers on how to correctly write the poem in question. I found reading and writing poetry to be quite enjoyable. I discovered I was able to write about anything I chose. I just prayed for the words and they would come. It’s become a simple, amazing, and often times a challenging process even though GOD is heavily involved. Without HIM giving me the words to work with I wouldn't get anywhere. I never would have started writing poetry or stories in the first place. If GOD hadn’t awakened the poet within me with those first poems. Anyways, that's a synopsis of how I became a poet and a writer.
