The dreams returned like they did most nights standing in a field surrounded by trees my hands spread at my side as if trying to call something from the earth usually it ends here nothing rising to meet my hands, not this time. A dark liquid started rising filling up the field and rising turning into a river the thick liquid feeling like glue gripping me tightly I felt like I couldn't breathe then I was falling in the liquid. Then I slammed awake as I hit the ground. I must have fallen out of the bed wrapped up in the blankets. I could slightly see sunlight through the heavy curtains. My butt hurt from landing on the floor so I sat there slightly in shock considering whether it was worth trying to get back to sleep. I untangled my legs and checked the time on my phone that sat next to the bed on the night stand. It was already past eleven am so I dragged myself for a shower rather than brave the dreams again. Chapter 2 “Hey sleepy head I thought you were a morning person?†Alex greeted me grinning from the couch he sat on as he read. “That was back in school I'm old enough to know better now,†I grizzled still standing awkwardly at the door. “Food or coffee?†He smirked. “Both please,†was my only response as he bookmarked his page and tossed the book down on the couch before standing. It was a warm day so he'd replaced his usual torn jeans with a pair plain black shorts and a singlet with a beach pattern on it. I was in similar form but red shorts and plain black short sleeve shirt. I wandered behind him as he led the way to the kitchen where the staff were more than happy to rustle up a fresh fruit salad, a coffee and some cheese toast. Alex spoke whilst I ate and came alive, he was chatting excitedly about the pool going for a run and all the other activities he wanted to do today. Tomorrow was my eighteenth birthday and apparently we were going for a hike and a picnic so he wanted to get hanging around the house out of our system today. He was buzzing with excitement or maybe caffeine already so I nodded occasionally and made eye contact so I looked like I was listening as I tried to recall the dream that had chased me out of bed this morning. I never remembered them till the next one started but I knew something felt different today. “So what first pool or run?†Alex asked after finally taking a breath between sentences. “Run so we can cool off in the pool,†I said with a smile thinking of all the times we raced back in school we'd both been good at track but Alex had also been good at every sport ever invented where I was clumsy and uncoordinated and tended to get more bruises then wins in anything except running. He smiled and stole my piece of toast I hadn’t intended to eat. I shoved a piece of strawberry away with a fork and he grabbed that too. Growing boys eat a lot and he knows I'm not a fan of strawberries. “We can't run straight after we ate so do you mind if I finish the chapter I was on whilst we wait?†Alex said his eyes locking on mine over what was now his piece of toast. He could be a book nerd when it came to certain books usually fairy tales and folk lore but no one else knew that except me. “Go for it I might sit out in the sun for a bit and try and get some energy,†I stretched and thanked the kitchen staff for my meal and left the dishes in the sink before heading out onto the front porch steps. I say porch but it was more like a set of stone step and a large patio that led to the front door. I sat on the steps off to the side so I could shut my eyes to the sun but still soak it up. I barely heard Alex until he was beside me then laid across the step I was on (because they were so wide he could easily fit) and placed his head on my lap whilst he read out loud. I froze because honestly whilst we are close we never really went into each others personal space.
