Never a dad....

poem by: Frank Hornby .

"You died an alcoholic, a very long time ago,
it's only through my recent research, that I finally got to know.
You found your way to New Zealand, to maybe start another life,
"Why didn't you do the right thing "dad," and make my mum your wife?"
I'm sure she would've made you happy, just my mum, you, and me,
there was no good reason for you to leave us, just how could you not see?
I wonder if you ever thought of us, as you lay dying on an Aukland hospital bed,
did thoughts of what you could've had, ever go through your selfish head?
You left us back in Liverpool, in 1955, I was a six year old Toxteth kid,
and as I played, running through dirty back entry's,
thinking of you, was something I just never did.
It was only as a teenager, that I began thinking of you.."dad,"
because all my mates had one, but a real dad I never had.
So my search is finally over, I can now put my mind to rest,
because unlike you, as a dad.....I've tried to be the best."

Cecilia Crasto commented:
And the best you are dear friend, the joy of being a father and having grand kids comes through in all your poems. At least you found closure and got on with life, some never do, the last line says it all...heartfelt.

Lovely Cecilia, you never let me down with your inspiring comments....finding closure, as you say really did ease my mind, and make me realise...what a lucky man I am, and that I didn't need him in my life to improve it......thanks again............waiting to read another one of your poems..
