My Wish List

poem by: Maria Williams
Written on Mar 08, 2017

Every Christmas I make my list, things I need you get the gist
A computer, Xbox, an I Pad too ,a racing bike in shades of blue
A new football a big green kite, some boxing gloves for my next big fight
Heaps of clothes, you know my style
What else, What else- let me focus a while
Oh Yes!! Those latest games just out
Will keep me amused without a doubt
A wide screen TV- Mum would love it
A theatre surround to complete the kit
That should keep me off the street
My fans would grow- Wouldn't that be neat
But top of the list a dog to call friend
A friendship we'll build to last till the end
I'll call him Snoopy-He'll come to my call
We'll go to the beach and hang at the mall
Haven't asked for much I must confess
I'm one of those kids who settles for less

Now its up to the fat guy in his jolly red suit
I'll sit on his knee and care not a hoot
Of the sniggers and smirks from the big kids there
A conspiracy I'm sure-But I don't really care
Something worries me though-A niggling doubt
Heaven forbid Mum hears this came from my mouth
But is Santa all there? Can he hear alright?
I show him my list- Nothings wrong with his sight
He reads it out slowly then gives me a smile
Then we grin at the camera and I linger awhile

As I look down the line I see something's not right
There's woe begone expressions, anger and fright
This little dude screams- He wont sit on his lap
His mother tries but he's a feisty young chap
Till Santa concedes and gives up his seat
Well!! I bow to the best cause that's no mean feat
There's tantrums galore and parents in a state
Now come along kids and just keep the faith
Is it something to do with that theory out there
That Santa's a fake but I really don't dare
To go down that road there's too much at stake
There's things I need badly, I'm starting to shake
I'll forgive him for last year when I asked for a dog
Got a mouse instead and a fat green frog
Why did he get it so wrong Mum? I asked in despair
She smiled at me sweetly as she patted her hair
You know there's only so much that sack can hold
And Santa knows best or so I've been told
You haven't been that good-Your list was too long
And please don't play that same Christmas song

So Santa, for this year my faith I will keep
I'll hang up my stocking and before I go to sleep
I'll put out your milk and some nice cookies too
And carrots for you reindeer Rudolph, Dasher and crew
But promises broken are not very cool
Come Xmas with a no show and I'll look like a fool
Please bring me my puppy or I'll give you the sack
I'll be a Non-Believer and Never Look Back!!

Cecilia Crasto commented:
Brings back many memories, makes one wonder if it's the kids or the parents who get more out of this once a year tradition, children are certainly hard to please. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this creative, well written poem...well done.
Maria Williams commented:
Thanks so much Cecilia, so glad you like it. What I was trying to achieve here was to show parents that its the simple things in life that kids still enjoy the most. Toys are always discarded when there's a pet to replace them. Some of my children's best memories are of time spent with us and their pets.

Nice, I like the tangible wish list, video games, clothes but the dog is priceless. Nothing can compare to an unconditional love of a Snoopy. I wish for a human being to enter my life with unconditional "Snoopy" love. I have asked Santa, the Easter bunny and even the Tooth Fairy...No luck.....write on
