Why Lord...Why?

poem by: Godfrey Georges

Driving down the avenue, another typical night,
Of peoples hustle, cars darting, and slow turning traffic lights.
Down the corner of Bergen, was a burgeoning crowd,
And despite all around them, they braved a black veiled shroud.
It was again another tragic loss, all too common yet true,
So, I was compelled to pull over to get a closer view.

And as I walk down Bergen, a heaviness begot me,
So much despair, crying; stunned was we.
Another of Newark’s son has lost his life.
Oh my God, it's his birthday... Why Lord...why?!
Here we are again; where did we go wrong?
I have faith in our people we are great, proud and strong.

But, alas, our city has lost her special son,
LEGENDARY, he was known, yes he was the one,
He majored in dance and is the life of every affair
In homes and on the streets, he danced with flair.
Jeepers, I didn't know who he was. To me he was “OOGY” (LOL)
My Daughter & facebook friends corrected me; the name is, “Uggie”

I'm so glad i got out my car, to share in this meeting,
I met you for the first time, albeit a solemn greeting;
Yet our brotherhood is in Africa, where our dreams abound,
“Tuonane Baadaye”, Kiswahili for “see you around”

In Memory of Eric “Uggie” Bowen
