What makes you, You?

poem by: Rod Moffat
Written on Nov 18, 2016

If I am honest I am not myself that appears to all,
But a result of my exposure to how the surrounding impacts fall

They are varied and dependent on how deep you love,
Sometimes you are compelled to appear to be strong and above

Above strengths that are not always yours to embrace,
As your experiences haven’t armed you to face

So life travels in directions that are not always choice,
But you feel obligated to agree and give voice

Compromise is the essence of compatibility,
Compatibility is the foundation of stability

So the price for fulfilment not necessarily reflecting true self,
You know how demanding and impacts emotional health

As you become aware the implication daunting,
To meet these needs can be seriously confronting

The solution needs to be an understanding that is shared,
Otherwise life can be a mirage with an injured soul bared

If truth from within were to be confronted,
Some may admit to be living a life unwanted

Then comes the real test of compromise,
As without it true meaning of sharing dies

So the path is travelled but for me not alone,
True self happy, but not the one that lives at home.
