Happy Birthday Dad (73rd)

Written on Jul 20, 2016

Here we are, it’s May 15th, and you are again another year older,
This time it seems, as candles are lit, could take a while to smolder.
Year 73 is about to begin, and for you it should not mean that much,
You’ve done this 72 times before, having dealt with life’s problems and such.
You really do not even look your age, regardless of how you may feel,
And when it comes to speaking your mind, there is no absence of zeal.
Everyone is happy to have you around, including Sadie and Jake,
I do hope as you read this card, you have the energy to stay awake!
Let’s not forget Hunter, too, who gives a shout out to his favorite dad,
You brought him into your home, replacing the outside life he once had.
Your life has had much success, it’s true, regret has not been an issue,
Continue to read these words I write, and you might need to grab a tissue!
You’re tough and hard, old school to the bone, and stubborn as an ox,
But I understand, while still a child, you attended the school of hard knocks.
When it comes to providing for your family, there are none that can compare,
We never need to ask you twice for help, your actions show how much you care.
You mean a lot to all of us, and to you that might come as a surprise,
Even throughout your circle of friends, you’re more than just “one of the guys”.
Here’s hoping today is special for you, and this birthday is one of a kind,
Just letting let you know you are valued by us, and guessing you will not mind.
So celebrate with all your heart, taking you to the place where eagles do soar,
Happy Birthday, to you my dad, and here is wishing you many, many more!!!!

What a wonderful tribute to your dad, he must be a very special man and he raised a good son.
Christopher Russon commented:
Great poem for a great dad.
Rod Moffat commented:
I was sensing so much pride in your Dad from you, and imaging pride back to you, those words you chose can only be from one place. Your bond with your Dad to be envied.
commented:
Truth be known; my dad and I have an extremely volatile relationship. I removed my ego from this writing, swallowed any form of pride, and decided to take the higher ground for this writing. My dad is a good natured person "underneath it all", has a good heart, but is almost impossible to connect with and/or get close to. I thought this was a good step in the right direction, after many other failed attempts to draw a connection throughout the years.
