Wrapped in society's chains

poem by: Emily Armstrong

Wrapped in society's chains
Pulling and tugging
But the chains only get tighter
And your body grows weaker
Wasted effort
Struggling to get out
To make a change
But your voice is lost
In the echoes of the dark cave
And your protests are ignored
Absorbed into the sunlight
That is hidden beneath the clouds of others judgement
And you want to break through
But the the crowd is too big
Their numbers too great
Of people like you
Who wanted to see the light
So they gave up the fight
And the sun came
Sure enough
But at the price of their soul
And as their bodies shined bright
Their insides were clouded
With darkness and shadows
And the endearing question
What if
What if I stood up
What if I fought
Would the chains still be wrapped around my fragile flesh
Or would others like me
Be walking free
Lighted on the inside and out
