THE SURPRISE PARTY
IN ALL OUR PLANNING WHEN THROWING A SURPRISE PARTY FOR BONNIE NEVER DID WE EVER IMAGINE. THAT WE WERE THE ONES WHO WERE ABOUT TO BE SURPRISED
It all started on a spring afternoon when my boyfriend Al Law, and one of my best friends Cheri Huston, and I were. Walking along the board walk when we bumped into my other best friend and school gossip Patty Collins
―Hey guys! Guess whose moving back into town? She asked
―Barney! Al answered with a big smirk on his face
―Very funny try Bonnie Cooper,‖ She answered back
You are kidding! Right? Cheri cried. I knew that we were all thinking about the same thing David, Cheri’s brother. It has been over a year since he committed suicide Bonnie who was his girlfriend at the time. Moved a week later without saying a signal word to anybody
―So? Al shrugged
―So, I was thinking about her a surprise welcome back home party‖ Patty shrugged back
―Why should we throw her a party after what she did—―Al began
―Oh, come on Al that was a long time ago. I think that’s a great idea let me know if you need any help Pats,‖ I interrupted
―Great! Well I’ve to go see you guys, later‖ Patty smiled
―I hate it when she does that,‖ Cheri mumbled
―When she does what? I asked in a confused tone of voice
―Nothing never mind‖ Cheri answered. Then walked off
Later that night
I was in my room working on my homework when my phone rang
―Lori? Someone whispered
―Yah? Who’s this? I asked
―Is it true that you and Patty are going to throw Bonnie, A surprise party? The voice asked
―Yah, but how did you—―I began
―I’m warning you now you guys, better change your minds! The voice interrupted
―Who the hell is this? I yelled into the phone
―It doesn’t matter who I am‖ Just don’t let me have to warn you again! The voice shouted before hanging up
Slamming the phone, I wondered who just called me. I picked up the phone again and dialed Al’s number
―Hello? He answered sleepily
―Hey, did you just call me? I asked him
No why?
―Cause I just got the weirdest call warning me not to help Patty‖ I answered
―Wow! He cried sounding more alert. And after I finished telling him the whole story
―Okay, let’s not panic it was probably just someone playing a trick on you‖ Al sighed
―I’m not panicking Al, I’m just pissed off‖ I snapped
―Okay, okay do you want me to come over? He asked
―No, that’s okay I’ll see you tomorrow in school okay? I replied.
Then after we said our goodbyes. I slowly put the phone back and wondered if it was not Al then who called me
The next day in study hall, I showed Cheri the inventions for the party
―So what do you think? I asked
―Okay I guess. But are you sure about throwing this party is such a good idea? She asked
I was about to answer her back when Ms. Anderson called out my name
―Lori, there’s a message for you at the front office. Please come up and get a hall pass‖
―Umm, Ms. Anderson told me that there was a message for me? I asked. The woman at the front desk
―Ah yes! Here you’re Lori,‖ She smiled handing me a white envelope. Then after thanking her, I took the envelope, went outside the office, and opened it. I slowly took it out and unfolded the note which read in red marker
I AM WATCHNG YOU!
I read the note three times before it finally sank in. On my way, back to my locker I bumped into Gary Row, Cheri’s sometimes boyfriend
―Hey Lori, have you seen Cheri? He asked smirking
Nope
―Oh, well if you do tell her that I’ve something for her‖ He continued smirking
―Yah what? I frowned
He just gave me a dirty smile then hurried off laughing
―What does Cheri see in him he’s such a jerk!‖ I thought to myself frowning
When I got to my locker I found Al, standing there waiting for me
Smiling he asked
―Hey! Ready to grab some lunch?
But instead of answering him, I quickly told him about the note
―And you don’t know who left it? He frowned after he read it
―Duh! What a stupid question’ I thought to myself.
―No Al, I don’t‖
―So maybe now you’ll forget all about this stupid party right? He mumbled staring at the floor
―Wrong! I’m not going to let some jerk tell me what I can do‖ I answered him
―But someone’s—―He began
―I don’t care! I interrupted. ―We’re having this party!
―Fine! Throw the stupid thing! However, count me out! He snapped
What?
―You heard me! If you want to go on with this Nancy Drew bullshit then go ahead! Knock yourself out but don’t count on me to help you! He shouted
―Fine, wimp out see if I care! But my mind is made up I’m going to find out. ―Who’s doing this with or without your precious help! I yelled back before storming off to my next class
Finally the night of Bonnie’s party
I felt nervous watching Bonnie walk out of her house and towards my car
―Maybe Al, was right maybe this was a bad idea,‖ I thought to myself
―Hey! I thought that Cheri and Patty were coming to the movies with us. She asked getting into the car
―They’re but we’ve to pick them up at the picture house‖ I answered her back smiling
―The picture house? Isn’t that the old mansion behind the cemetery? She asked
Yep
―What are they doing out there? Bonnie frowned
―Who knows? But we’ll soon find out! I laughed
A couple minutes later, I pulled my car to the entrance to the old mansion. We got out and walked to the front door in silence. I slowly opened the wooden door and let Bonnie go in first
The word surprise echoed through the halls as the lights flicked on showing a dozen grinning faces. Bonnie just stared at them with a blank confused look on her face. The shouts were followed by more cheers and laughter
―Look at her she’s speechless! Cheri laughed giving her a quick hug. ―It’s great to see you,‖ She added
―Thanks you too‖
Bonnie looked over towards me and vowed that she would find a way to pay me back. Al only greeted Bonnie with an uncomfortable look then wondered off to talk to some of the other kids
―Doesn’t Bonnie look great? I asked him
―Yah I guess,‖ He mumbled
―Oh, for god’s sakes Al! It’s supposed to be a party not a funeral! I snapped
―Hey, get off my back! Lori, you should be happy that I even showed up to the stupid thing! He snapped back. Before he stormed off
―Hey! Have you seen Cheri? Gary asked me. Blocking my path to the stereo
―No, not lately‖ I answered him back coldly
―Well, if you do tell her that I’m looking for her okay‖ He smiled
―Yah, sure okay Gary,‖
I then went looking for Al and asked him if he wanted to dance?
―Umm, maybe later‖ He mumbled staring at the floor
―So far so good! Patty laughed. Once she joined us
I –
―Aw! Shit! Who invited Tim? Patty interrupted
―I guess Don, did‖ Cheri answered, ―He was with him when I told him about the party‖
Hey guys—
―Holy shit David? Al interrupted in a pure panic tone of voice ―It can’t be you’re dead!
David twin brother just stared at him with a confused look on his face
―I’m sorry okay? Please just go away it was just an accident‖
―What the hell are you talking about Al-‖ Cheri began
The lights along with a gun going off interrupted her
―Someone turn on the freaking lights! I cried out. Once I almost tripped over something on the floor. A few seconds later, the lights came back on; I looked down and saw Al lying on the floor holding his left arm. Blood was pouring down onto the floor beneath him
―I’ve been shot! He yelled repeatedly
―You idiots couldn’t wait a few more seconds to turn on the stupid lights! Gary growled
―Gary, are you crazy! What do you think you are doing? I cried out while applying pressure to Al’s wound
―Shut up bitch or I’ll shot you next! He snapped. Then quickly moved forward and grabbed Bonnie roughly by the waist and pointed the gun to her head
―Okay, now if anyone moves and dear old Bonnie, here gets it understand? He ordered
Everyone just slowly nodded their heads yes
―Good, I know that you losers wouldn’t want to force me into doing something that you’d later regret! He laughed keeping a firm grip around Bonnie. He removed the gun away from her head
Okay now move!
We all quickly made our way into another room Gary found the light switch and turned them on
―I think this will do for now. We’ll just stay here until I can think of a way to escape‖
―Gary, what are you doing this for? Cheri demanded
―Well for starters your dead brother you see dumbass over there‖ He nodded in Al’s direction believes that he’s the one who killed him
―But he did! Bonnie interrupted. ―We followed him into the woods that night we were worried that he’d something stupid.‖ After I told him that, I was sleeping with Al, behind his back
―What! Both Cheri and I cried out
―Sorry Lori, but its true Al and I were seeing each other for months before this all happened. Giving Al a dirty look, I smirked
―Oh really‖
―Anyway David, threw a fit‖ Bonnie began
―Wow! I can’t imagine why? Cheri smirked
―He went crazy he grabbed his father’s gun and ran into the woods we chased after him. ―But as soon as we caught up with him‖ David, jumped out from one of the bushes and attacked Al.‖ They started fighting over the gun and the next thing I knew the gun went off and David fell on the ground,‖ Bonnie explained
―And what do you’ve to do with this Tim? Patty asked him
Huh?
―Oh, I was walking my dog that night when I heard the gunshot. I went to see what happened. ―When I overheard Bonnie and Al, auguring over what to do next. It was Al’s idea to make it look like he shot himself. ―Then he threatened us that he’d kill us both if we ever told anyone what really happened‖ Tim explained
―I don’t believe this you dump my brother for that idiot! Cheri shouted at Bonnie. She jumped up and was about to go where Bonnie was sitting but Don stepped in between them
―Aw! Let them go at it! Gary laughed
―How about if we go at it huh Gar? Don growled. Gary pointed the gun at him daring him to move
―You might as well hear the rest‖ Bonnie interrupted
―You mean there is more? I asked
―After we helped Al, he ran off I was hysterical I couldn’t think straight‖ Bonnie started to explain
―Oh, yah right! I bet you were! Cheri answered smirking
―Please Cheri, just let her finish for god sakes‖ Don sighed
―What? How could you even defend this little slut Don! Cheri exploded. ―God, he was your brother too your twin or don’t you even care!
―How could you even ask me that Cheri of course I care! I just want to know‖ The truth about what happened to him now shut up and let her finish! Don snapped. Gary’s laughter interrupted them
―And what’s so funny? Don frowned
―You guys! Dumbass didn’t kill him I did! Gary laughed
What!
―But the gun went off when they were fighting how did you kill him when he was already dead? Bonnie asked in a confused tone of voice
―I was there that night‖ Gary sneered
―And what were you doing in the woods at night? Al asked
―It doesn’t matter what I was doing‖ I saw the whole thing at first I thought that you really whacked him. ―But after everyone left I looked for myself he wasn’t even shot. ―He just hit his head on a rock and was knocked out‖ Gary answered him
―My brother was still alive when you shot him you son of a bitch! I am going to kill you! Don yelled. He was about to tackle him but Gary shot into the air
―But why? I mumbled
―I always hated that jerk he always he thought he was better then everyone. ―But the last straw was when the coach kicked me off the football team because of him‖ Gary smirked
―The word asshole isn’t good enough for you,‖ Cheri snorted. Gary just ignored her and continued
―So I picked up the gun and taught him a final lesson in respect,‖ He laughed
―You’re sick how could you just kill someone just like that? Patty smirked
―Like this!‖
Gary laughed then pointed his gun at her and pretends to pull the trigger. Tim moved closer to Don and gave his arm a light tap
―Hey! Remember that game that we used to play when you were kids? He whispered over to him
―Hey! What are you two whispering about? Gary frowned
―Hey, dumbass! Turn around Al’s trying to sneak out‖ Don cried out
Huh?
And just as Gary turned his head, Tim reached down and grabbed a wooden stick from the floor. And swung it as Gary
was turning back around hitting him across his head. Gary didn’t utter a sound he just fluttered his eyes closed as he fell to the floor
Don quickly picked up the gun from the floor and said
―Quick, let’s get the hell out of here‖
They all took a final look at Gary who was lying in a dark pool of blood
―You think he’s dead? Patty asked
―Who cares! Cheri answered her as she walked passed her
―Hey! You guys know how to throw a great party! Bonnie laughed
―Just do us all a great favor Bonnie and shut the hell up! I snapped
An hour later, they were sitting in the middle of the living room floor of the old house eating what was left of the party food
―So you think Al’s going to be okay? Patty asked. Taking the soda from Tim’s hand
―Yah, he just lost some blood but he’ll be okay in a day or two‖ I answered her
―So it was him who was trying to stop the party this whole time,‖ Cheri asked
―I guess so‖ I shrugged
―Wow! Can you just imagine thinking that you killed somebody all this time? ―When it was really Gary. Who did it that must suck! Patty added
―Oh, yah right! Poor baby! I answered sarcastically. ―So did Bonnie go with him to the hospital?
―I think so either that or she just took off again‖ Tim shrugged
―I’m really sorry you guys, I wanted to tell you the truth a long time ago. ―But I was scared that Al, would keep his promise and come after me and Bonnie‖ He added
―It’s okay so what do you think is going to happen to Gary? Cheri asked
―Oh! I’ve a funny feeling that as soon as little psycho boy wakes up. ―He’s going to get a very big surprise! Don laughed
