Before they brainwashed you

Before they brainwashed you

When you were just a child
Before they brainwashed you
Who did you believe in?
What did you think was true?
If no one ever mentioned God
Would you even think about it?
If no one ever told you.
Would it interest you a bit?

You’re taught when just a child
You have no say in it
They frighten you with fire, and brimstone
And you, you must admit
If no one ever told you
Then you would not believe
You’d have no fears, not any
There’d be no cause to grieve.

With Taoists, Buddhists, and the Jains
A god is never mentioned
No one ever thinks about it
It don’t touch their attention
They meditate and look within
And find out who they be
And live their lives in harmony
All filled with mystery.

So will these good folk go to Hell
Until eternity?
Do you really think this so
It don’t make sense to me
When you die, my friends you die
And no one really knows
Just what happens after death
Or where the soul might go.

Very good point. I was raised in a religion full of guilt and fear and self-loathing, and it took a while to let go of those things. It's amazing to think that none of them really know what is true, they just act like they do, and damage thousands along the way. Great poem!
