THE INTRUSIVE APOSTROPHE

poem by: Darryl Ashton
Written on Jun 11, 2017

Be careful with apostrophe's,
For all it seem's absurd,
They have a cheeky habit,
Of creeping into lots of word's!

They think it's very clever,
They think they will impress,
By placing themselve's near
the end of a word,
And just before the 's'.

You may see sign's for
cabbage's,
Carrot's and cucumber's,
With apostrophe's enjoying
a wake-up call,
While the writer's had a
slumber.

Known as 'flying comma's',
As they sit above the letter,
But, to me, the word
'intruder',
Suit's them so much better!

I start to raise my hackle's,
When it hover's like a kite,
Gate-crashing my sentence's,
Then claiming squatter's right's!

So if your word's have
apostrophe's,
Make sure they're in the
right place,
For when they play their
silly game's,
Your writing skill's lose
face!
