MAKE THE BEST OF EVERY DAY

I wonder if it's just a
masque, a mirage,
This life which we are
leading day to day.
Do you suppose it's
make-believe and
magic?
The script of some
great tragi-comic play?

Can we find a reason
for existence
Hidden under all that
is mundane?
Is there 'something'
just beyond our senses,
And if there is, then
does it have a name?

Is there some divine
and wondrous purpose
For everything Creation
must endure?
Is this world, I truth,
the smelting furnace,
And we the ore that's
fired to make us pure?

How can we find strength
to face each challenge
We meet upon the road
twixt life and death?
And how are we to solve
the great conundrum
Of why, in heaven's
name, we first drew
breath?

I fear that we may
never know the answer
Though sages, seers
and prophets point the
way,
And so, perhaps, I'll
cease my fruitless
fretting
And make, and take,
the best of every day.
