The Righteous Man

poem by: Jack Sayles

He sees their sins as his to atone, the righteous path is one walked alone. He looks for innocence through world weary eyes, he laughs for their smile, he weeps for their cries. One man alone, against the onset of night, it is he, and he alone, who lives in the light. Looking without seeing, never finding what he needs, he lives by his laws, his own set of creeds. He wears his ideals like a warm winter coat, never trying change others,to shove them down someone's throat. A solitary wanderer, living without others, he never has family, no sisters or brothers. He sees them all as his children, and proud as he is, estranged he must be. For try as he might their sins to atone, the righteous path is one walked alone.
