Cowardly Lion

poem by: Theresa Taylor
Written on Nov 21, 2016

I was there when you lost your teeth
Felt your release of such willing prey
You could have had me teeth or not
You could have had me either way
Someone ate your heart out
Their pockets now full of metal
They striped you of your gold
They striped you of your yellow
I saw your soft underbelly
Vulnerable and slow
You crawled into that cave
going for your goal
Now you're starving and gnawing on back bones
Eyes wide in dark
Your claws are such a joke
You chose them, now we are apart
I hope you feel you heart shrivel
Maybe then you'll understand
To them you're just a stupid lion
To me, you were a man
