Homeless

poem by: Alex McEwan

Homeless people out on the street
Nowhere to sleep, nowhere to eat
Worldly possessions in one little bag
Walking along with shoulders that sag

Where have they come from no one asks
What pain do they hide beneath their masks?
Dirty old clothes tattered and torn
The worn out shoes, their feet adorn

Faces begrimed, and matted hair
They live their lives in solitaire
Asking for a coin to spare
For some food, they can share

Have they had husbands or had wives?
Who really knows what’s twisted their lives?
Do they have families left behind?
Searching for them, going out of their mind?

Roxanne Dubarry commented:
Dear Alex, Jesus Christ's servants care about the homeless. In Everett, Washington where I reside, several local churchs sponsor free community meals, free clothing and personal needs such as razers etc. If someone is interested in learning more about their group, they are usually willing to listen. Yes, Alex the homeless are real people with real life and death problems. They are not worthless trash!
Trevor Cartwright commented:
Alex, I concur with Roxanne. All of the churches that I have attended care deeply about the homeless. I have served with a lot of ministries (food, battered women shelters, shelter, etc.). Further, I have had some great heart-to-heart conversations with homeless men and women. You are right though: society tends to marginalize them. A homeless man who is just as human as you or I gets lumped into the impersonal, dehumanized group known as "the homeless." It is our job to fix this...

This is a poem about being homeless. I have to tell you a lot of people are that way due to job loss or divorce. There is a mission in the city where I live. I was homeless for 18 months and I was given a temporary home. Homeless people have problems like lack of education sometimes.Women wind up staying in a shelter to get away from an abusive husband since the next time the husband might kill his wife. I can tell you one thing for sure I never look at homeless in the same way. Since I was one of them for awihile.

Simple yet effective compassion on show here. Not enough of it in the world as we all know. Well done.

Good poem. Someone mentioned the idea of giving handwarming pads to help homeless people. They are available for a pound.
