back road b&e

i'm driving fast as i can drive, trying to beat the heat, tiring of this ride, so i decide to rest my feet,
seek release and space to breath,
take a break from my travels,
i recline in my seat, exit at the next gravel,
and drive till i'm surrounded by trees cornfields and cattle, i take my foot off the pedal, just let the car idle,
and search for a meadow, or a thicket of trees,
a place i can settle, and seek out some peace,
i look towards the east, and on yonder hill stands,
a lone wooden structure, on abandoned farm land,
               (chorus)
a ramshackle shack, a house that's hardly standing,
i knew it had to be abandoned, so I thought i'd stop to see, if it's not locked i'll take a peek, it was a back road b&e

i put the car in park, turn the key in the ignition,
noticed i could hear my heart, if i took the time to listen, i feel my pulse begin to quicken, and i question,
what's happened to the sanctuary sought,
something seems different about this house,
but i can't figure out just what,
i feel consumed by curiosity, as my stiff legs carry me,
up the steps and through the door,
as if there's someone else controlling me,
at first it's hard to see, until my eyes accept the dimness, i brace myself in wait, for what i was about to witness,
i cringe, then it's grins because there's nothing,
i mean what did i expect to find, the boogeyman or something, a bit relieved i weave my way,
past broken glass and stacks of dishes,
clear a path so i can pass, and make my way into the kitchen, i question how long it's been since this was lived in,
but something here seems somehow different,
i stop to cock my ear and listen,
and it's giving me the shivers, though in a way it's exciting, how it's all broken down, yet still seems oddly inviting,
i wonder what could be hiding, behind each closed door,
as i watch a dusty light beam, slowly stretch along the floor, i make my way across it, towards a door i'm sure's a closet, my fingers find the knob, and i place my hand upon it,
and as quickly as i do, i feel completely filled with doom,
i give the handle a tug, it squeaks as i pull it,,
and i'm greeted by a frightened face, a scream and a bullet
               (chorus)
a ramshackle shack, a house that's hardly standing,
i knew it had to be abandoned, so i thought i'd stop to see, if it's not locked i'll take a peek, it was a back road b&e

the door's unlocked, there's no alarm,
so i thought what could be the harm, it was a back road b&e
